A great gadget type thing that most State Departements of Transportation are taking advantage of is the traffic camera. Most states have their own traffic cams showing the traffic conditions of different sections of roadway, they can almost all be found at DOTwebcams.com. Check them out before you travel and save time by familiarizing yourself with the route and avoiding possible closures or slowdowns.
