One of the more useful automobile “gadgets” we’ve seen in a long time is being developed for production. It is in effect a retractable studded tire. How would that work? Something along these lines:
Buried beneath the tread is a deflated bladder and a wireless receiver. With the flip of a switch by the driver, a wireless signal is sent to the drive tires. The signal causes the bladder to inflate with air and the inflating of the bladder causes the studs to be pushed out from their holes to beyond the surface of the tire. Voila! Studded tires.
An invention like this comes along rarely, it would truly revolutionize the tire industry and force the altering of some state laws as well. It’s great innovation like this that we truly appreciate.
