Ten Facts About Radio Shack

For anyone who grew up in the 1970s or 80s and was aware of technology, Radio Shack was the place to go. From early personal computers to hard to find stereo equipment and adapters and wiring of all sorts, Radio Shack was indispensable at the time.

Here are ten facts about Radio Shack:

  • The company was started in 1921 as a one-store operation with mail order to service amateur radio enthusiasts.
  • The company name comes from the name of the small radio building that sits on the deck of large ships.
  • In the 1950s, Radio Shack first started selling its own brand of electronics. They marketed these under the name Realist until they were sued for trademark infringement and changed the name to Realistic.
  • After experiencing financial difficulties, Radio Shack was purchased by the Tandy Corporation in 1963.
  • Radio Shack’s first personal computer, the TRS-80, came on the market in time for Christmas 1977.
  • The TRS-80 Color Computer was a huge hit for Radio Shack when it debuted in 1980. It was made to hook up and se a television as its monitor.
  • Before buying Radio Shack, the Tandy Corporation’s main business was leather goods.
  • Tandy continued manufacturing personal computer up through Intel’s 486 technology, eventually putting out two different laptop (called notebook) models in 1994.
  • In 1995, the official spelling of Radio Shack was altered to be spelled as one word, RadioShack.
  • In 2006, the CEO of Radio Shack resigned due to “misstatements” on his resume concerning college degrees he had claimed to have earned, but had not.
