WIM System To Aid Truck Drivers

Some states have taken to installing a Weight-In-Motion system to aid the traffic flow of semi-trucks. It would be a great help to truck drivers if they could avoid waiting in long lines at weigh stations.

The Weight-In-Motion (WIM) system works like this, a driver or trucking company purchases a transponder from the state department of transportation. The transponder gets mounted in the cab of the truck and is programmed with all the details pertaining to that truck (registration, size, safety record, etc.). Certain weigh stations have WIM scales embedded in the pavement in the road about a half mile before you get to them.

The truck then drives across the scale, the weight is instantaneously sent to the weigh station, and then the transponder communicates the truck’s information. At the weigh station the incoming truck information is compared to the weight that came in from the scale and if everything is approved of a green light is illuminated on the transponder and the truck driver can continue down the road, bypassing the weigh station. If the light on the transponder turns red, the truck driver must pull into the weigh station for further inspection.

This is a great little technological advancement that will save money and time on the law enforcement side of the issue, and save delivery time and money on the commercial side of the issue. This could be a win-win situation for all involved.
